To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to you to apply for the position of next year’s Social Studies teacher. I believe that my skills are well-aligned for this position and that I would be a positive addition to the teaching staff within your school.

For the past four years I have had the opportunity to work at Pritzker College Prep, an inner-city charter school within Chicago. While there, I have had many influential experiences that have shaped me into the teacher I am today. One valuable skill that I have learned is how far good rapport goes with my students. This positive connection ultimately fosters a more interactive classroom. As a teacher, I strive every day to make sure that my classroom is as inviting as possible to my students. I want students to know that they are in an environment where they can voice their opinions, respectfully agree or disagree with each other, and learn from one another. In order to achieve this, I make sure that I get to know who my students are, not just as someone who sits in one of my many desks for 72 minutes and then leaves, but as a person. I encourage students to share their successes, and challenges so that other students will learn from their experiences. I also try to support my students outside of the classroom at their club sponsored events, or athletic activities. In doing so, I am able to build a strong connection with my students that lasts long after they leave my classroom.

While earning my degree at Michigan State University, I was fortunate enough to be a member of the Men’s Varsity Swim Team. The skills that I enhanced while being on the team: leadership, perseverance, and competitiveness are all qualities that I apply to my teaching. As an athlete, I would begin each year with a new goal in mind and work my hardest every day in order to achieve that goal. I use this same approach in my classroom. I create goals to improve my teaching; learning from both things that have succeeded and things that haven’t. Each day, week, month, and year new challenges arise, and when these moments present themselves I strive to do my best in order to make sure that the needs of my students are met. Being a teacher is exactly like being a member of a phenomenal team. Student growth, and success, are greater when students, parents, administrators, colleagues, and myself work together. I want my students to know that although they may have me as their teacher for only a short time, they will always have someone who will support them.

I believe that my experiences, and enthusiasm for teaching, would make me a positive addition to your staff. I hope that you will consider me for the Social Studies position within your school. Please feel free to contact me via phone or email at your convenience to discuss my background as well as the requirements for this role.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Sincerely,

Bryan M. Williams
